If it is up to a New York lawmaker that is. According to bill sponsor Karim Camar the message should read: ”Safety Warning: Drinking beverages with added sugar contributes to obesity, diabetes, and tooth decay,” the Washington Post quotes.
In a statement Camar continues: “We can’t sit back and pretend that sugary drinks aren’t harmful to people, (…) We have a public health crisis, which is a direct result of people consuming too much sugar”. Camar further points out about the increasingly overwhelming evidence that sugar may lead to health problems and states: “The research is clear: too much sugar leads to health problems such as obesity and diabetes, (…) As a society, we have a moral obligation to educate people so they can make healthier choices.”
Will it happen and is it something that should be done to warn consumers? According to Reuters a similar bill was proposed in California earlier this year; without success.
